I’m new to LumberJocks. So I spent the past few days taking a look at some of the wonderful projects that have been shared. Guys and Girls, you’re a tough act to follow.
However, I just wanted to share a project which recently came out of my workshop. Most of my work involves Arts & Crafts furniture.
But this one’s kinda special for me. It’s the first time that my wife has wandered into the shop and asked me if I could teach her to “make something” from start to finish. Usually, she simply asks me if I could build something for our home or for a friend. That day, for some reason, she had reached the point at which she wanted to “get her hands dirty”, so to speak.
So here it is:
Sorry for the bad photo. Just click the photo for a full view. I’ll get better when I post more to the site.
At any rate, the clock is solid cherry, with many coats of hand-rubbed Danish oil. And, by the way it keeps good time. The clock componants were ordered from a local supplier. All metal-work is solid brass.
After getting over her initial fear, my wife sure gave my router table a good workout and many hours were spent hand sanding, rubbing . . . and worrying. Yep. I’m real proud of her. Hope you all enjoy.
I’ll post some of my own work soon.

Welcome to Lumberjocks, Bob. Tell Judy she “done good”!
That’s some beautiful cherry. The design bears a lot of similarity to this one that I did in walnut.
Keep ‘em coming!

What a wonderful first project your wife has completed. She and yourself should be very proud of this great piece. The finish makes the warm tone of the cherry really come out and the craftswomenship is great!!!!!!

Thank you all for your kind comments. I’ve taken a look at some of your Project postings and again, you’re all a tough act to follow.
I’ve also shown my wife some of your postings and she’s asked me for the LumberJock’s link. We (particularly you, Cheryl and Debbie) may have created a monster. Immediately after breakfast this morning she went out to my shop and scrounged up a scrap length of walnut that had been resting comfortably and not bothering anyone. She carried it into the house along with one of my idea books. Her question was “is this enough to make this box?” and “where is that dovetail jig thingy of yours?”
Hmmm! If this continues, where will I be able to smoke my cigar?

Debbie -
No, I don’t think she’s signed up yet, but give her a few hours. After 33 years of marriage, I don’t keep track of her as well as I maybe should anymore.

Geez, Bob….you really have created a monster, it seems. My meager pile of wood is the only thing in the house I can call my own. The thought of my wife horning in on my last bastion of male dominance sends shivers up my spine!

Power to the Women :D
I’m sure your wife would gladly pass the ownership of the dishwasher and washing machine to you and you can call them your own and not let other people touch them!

I’ll have you know, MsDebbieP, that I do 75% of the laundry in our house, and at least that percentage of cooking and dishwashing! (Which is probably why she leaves my tools alone.) lol

Hi Charlie,
Thanks for your comments, I’ve look at your Project site and see that you have built a very similar clock. Looks great! Also, you seem to have a number of other first rate projects. I’ll take a more careful look when I have more time.
By the way, when did you think you had any bastion of male dominance, left at all. I gave mine up somewhere around the “I Do” part of my relationship with my wife, some 33 years ago.
Debbie – I think you’re going to be trouble (he he).
I’d better post some of my own projects in the next day or so, so my wife’s head can shrink back to its normal size.

Nice to see the workload shared.

Bob,
Tell your wife that the clock is beautiful! If that’s the kind of quality she can do on her first try I’d say she is a natural born woodworker. She really must continue! Now, the secret here is to start dropping hints that you’re going to need a bigger shop and more tools so the two of you can work at the same time. ;)
This whole thread has made me chuckle today, and I needed a really good laugh after the week I’ve been having! Frankly, I’d love to have the wife come out and give woodworking a try. Working side by side on a project sounds like a very enjoyable time.

Hi Iowa,
Thanks for the kind words. I’m fortunate that I already have a very large shop and all the tools I can fit into it. My wife has always been very supportive of that.
I’ve taken a quick look at your Projects site and notice you have a pair of Stickley style end tables. Would like to communicate with you about them, as my special interest is Stickley reproductions and interpretations. I’ll post a similar table as a Project, so that you have a picture to relate to.
Also would be very interested in your sprayer. I have avoided spraying the my finishes, as I’ve found that hand-rubbed finishes or French polished finishes give very nice results and are somewhat forgiving. Would like to learn more about sprayed finishes.
Look for my Project posting in the next day or so, and we can communicate.

Your wife’s clock is a great project. Congratulations to her. You were a great instructor. (I guess you provided instructions). Before long she won’t be bring the wood into the house she’ll have her own corner where you better not touch any of it.

Bob,
It’s hard to get a word in edge wise around here. Looks like Judy did herself proud. Not to mention she must have had a pretty good teacher. Carleen and I really don’t work well together but after all these years we have learned to accomodate each other. Today is our aniversary(SP?). If she hasn’t run me off yet I guess she probably won’t. Better get out of Judy’s way, never make the cook mad. Go teach her some more.

Pleasure to meet you, Tom & Carleen,
You’ve touched two of my most favorite subjects: woodworking and saddles! As I mentioned in my profile, If I’m not working (Director of a Homeland Security Contractor), I can be found in the shop or in the barn. Yep, horses – another disease at least as serious as woodworking. Several years ago we built a separate building next to the barn for saddles and tack. It’s only my wife and I who ride, and as far as I remember we have only one A each. But the tack room is home to about 8 custom saddles and a collection of tack. Would enjoy seeing some of your saddle work. Do you have a web site?
Judy and I do work well together and she seems to remain patient with me while I try to remain patient with her (most of the time.)
By the way, happy anniversary. Judy and I just ticked off 33 years. It may work out.

OK, OK, I don’t want to spoil this love fest, but for me the thing that makes our 45 years of marriage work is respecting boundaries. My wife does her things and I do mine. I appreciate her contributions and she mine.
But I have to confess, the thought of her even going into my shop send shivers up my spine. LOL
Back to Judy’s clock. Nice work Judy. I’m a lover of small wooden boxes and I suppose a small mantle clock is as close as you can get to being a box as you can get. This clock is lovely. I’ve done a few clocks: here, here and here.

Again,
Thanks to all of you for your encouraging comments.
And Don -
I’ve looked at your boxes. Very impressive! I’ve never focused on boxes before. Yours are certainly beautiful and provide a goal to achieve.
So far as respecting bounderies – Somewhere along the line, I seem to have lost control.
