I have some friends who are irrational University of Utah (Red and White) fans. So I decided in honor of my team beating them handily in basketball, I would make them a cutting board which they could take to their “tailgating” party when football season comes around. I started by planning the cutting board in an Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet calculates the number of individual “sticks” needed for each color, (Padauk and Maple in this case) and the board feet necessary for each color also. One thing I did different from the previous model for this type of cutting board which was featured on this site was make the “sticks” 12 inches long rather than 10 inches. That way I can get 4 cutting boards out of a set rather than three. I did this because when I went to buy the lumber, they always rounded the amount UP to the next board foot, so I had to buy that amount anyway.
Along the way I made this little bolt together clamp shown here which keeps the glue-up in line rather than turning into a potato chip. It’s easier to set up than two two boards with a clamp on each end. And, I have a shortage of clamps anyway. Make sure you cover the glue side of the boards with plastic package tape if you do this.
As you can see if you count the squares, I had a perfect plan in the spreadsheet, then ignored it (oops) when I glued the pieces up. But the recipient was delighted anyway and now I’ve got to get rid of 3 more of these things because they’re not welcome in my house. :)
