This is another valet style open box that will be used to store pencils and pens on my desk. It is made from Maple and Purpleheart. This was my first attempt at box joints and I have to say they are not that easy for me. I hand cut them and the end result is not that great. I do like the knot on the front. Used water based poly to finish it (I have swirl marks in the poly where I sanded between coats with 320 grit paper, not sure how to remedy that).

I agree. Box joints are not as easy as they look – even when done with a tablesaw.

The only way I know how to get those swirl marks off is to sand down and try again. But maybe you can convince yourself that they are a feature…

I can’t see anything wrong with those box joints, they look pretty good from here. Nice wood combination too.

Looks very well put together. You are on your way to becoming a great box maker.

Thanks for the feedback. I really enjoyed making it and am looking forward to doing more. I don’t have access to a table saw and even if I did, I think I would prefer doing it by hand. I’ve convinced myself that if I can perfect my use of hand tools then I deserve some credit for my creations but until then, I’m just learning and having fun.
