This is my first box. It is more a valet that I made for a friend who has been using a cardboard box for years to put his keys and wallet in. I thought this might look a little nicer. It is made using Maple and Cherry. I’m fairly pleased with it but there are a lot of mistakes on the joints and also the way I cut the wood for the sides (I could have had a very nice dark bottom wrapping around the outside of the Cherry sides but I’ll know better next time). I also learned not to use the belt sander because it shaves off entirely to much wood and also leaves burn marks which were very difficult to remove. I finished it with water based polyurethane.

Pretty good for a first box! You even tried some fancy jointing, so you ought to be proud of it.

nice work, to get rid of the burn marks you can soak them in mineral spirits and then sand them off but witha belt sander you have to keep the piece moving.
