Here is my first attempt at making a cane. I didn’t have material thick enough at the time but had a lot of scrap and thats what this is made from. Curly Maple with a layer of Walnut in the shaft. Shaft was turned on my lathe and the handle was done by hand with rasps and microplanes.
It was finished with a simple oil finish, Watco Teak wood finish.
This cane was made for my Dad. As this cane got to be used more and more the oil finish was getting dull and dirty. At one point it was broken and he was really sad about that but I thought I could fix it and it would give me a chance to not only refinish it but to personalize it as well. I put 2 coats of spray can lacquer on the cane then printed up the logos of the units he served with during his stint in the Air Force as well as the American Legion logo. Laid them on the cane and let it cure for a day then covered with 6 more coats of lacquer. It came out looking very nice and I recommend the use of decal paper if anyone wants to produce that “special” touch. He was so honored and humbled by it. He passed away just 2 weeks later from Cancer. He was so proud of that cane and showed it off to everyone, we decided to bury it with him, its his forever now.
