This was my first piece of furniture I ever built. It was conceived to fulfill a very specific function.
Long ago when all of my kids were before middle school age, my wife and I saw a definite need for the kids to have a place to put all of their coats, backpacks, shoes, etc. so that were handy and in one place.
We decided to build a cubby system (lockers? Hmmm… they kinda look like lockers.) We wanted to not only be able to store shoes, boots, backpacks, etc. But also serve as a place where one could sit and put on their shoes, store extra items if need be, etc.
This is built out of birch plywood, with edge banding of a wood I don’t remember… it was just some wood that was handy. A doweling jig was used to drill the dowel holes for the edge banding.
There are four “cubbies” each with a top stoage shelf, and coat hanger, and shoe/boot storage on the bottom.
This has been in pretty much continuous use for about 10 years.
