You may recall my previous plywood project ? I decided to spend a little energy and effort to further explore what could be done with plywood. All of these boxes were made from one 4×4 sheet of 3/4 BC plywood purchased at HD. As you know this plywood comes with a fir top and bottom ply and a random assortment of mahogany/luan type woods in the the center. The fir is not very attractive and exposing the inner plys creates an interesting look. Also of note, all the work was done on a 70s era Craftsman table saw that I got from my Father’s shop. I used a router to make recesses for hinges and an orbital sander. The key is to either cope, bow or bevel every surface to expose the inner plys. The combintions are unlimited. Occasionally you will need to repair some of the voids created as you cut into the inner plys, easy to do with little pieces of scrap. Lots of sanding needed. I experimented with a few different stains to see different looks. Everyone seems to like the look and many like these boxes better than some of my exotic wood boxes. It’s all fun.

Well done. The exposed edges actually enhance the pieces.

BC is a grading code. B was the good side and c the lesser. In the lumber yards you will see aa,ab,ac,bb,bc,cdx these grading codes let you know of the top and bottom grades of your plywoods.
Nice boxes———- thinking outside the box and being creative. Great job

These kinds of projects are what makes LJ’s website a lot of fun. It encourages us to expand our horizons in the woodshop. Thanks for posting these amazing boxes.
