I made this simple bench from a discarded mantle piece. The cedar timber was long enough to cut the two legs and make a nice outdoor bench. The legs are glued into a 2” deep mortise and pegged with a round thru tenon to the bench top. Several coats of clear marine varnish protect the piece.

really nice piece. I love the heaviness of it. I’m working on a similar bench from a length of walnut I picked up at a mill a couple months back. It was cupped and not the greatest piece but at $1 bf how could I not take it. Once the weather warms up I will finish it and share. Its great when you can find a great piece or wood and recycle it.

Hum, I could have used that mantel for my next commision job of a cedar mantel. Looks great as a bench. Wonder if i could still hang that above the fireplace and the legs look like supports? Good job.

Nice job.
I love that hampster wood. I just got about 500 BF of the same at 4/4 I am making our flooring from. I have some widths up 20” , way too wide, but GAWD it’s old, to get that big here in KY.
You may wanna watch for checking, it’s bad for that.
