I borrowed the design from my employer at the time, Ken Smith Bass Guitars out of NYC. I made them for him in a shop in Pa. I altered it enough to avoid any copy right infringements.
We had made the “sister” bass ( same wood but 6 string and lefty) for Paul McCartney.

I was rewireing a new push pull pot , so the knob is off and the electronics are open in the back.
It is a 5 st. fretless, sounds like a freight train in heat when played hard on the Low B string.

It’s official, LJs is the coolest site on the web. That is an awesome project and a great looking bass. Have you ever made an acoustic guitar? I’m interested in trying (In addition to making a snowboard, a pergola, and everything else I dream of).

Only a few so far, I had a shop fire in ‘95 and lost many jigs and small tools, so even now, I am still catching up.
At the time of the blaze ( arson BTW) I had an Acoustic in the works for the late Dan Fogelberg.
Joe Satriani had a “Thanks Duane” on one CD liner, he was a recipient of an Ibanez USA RG that I had made.

Hmmm
AT Smith we use a Pearl “S” on the headstock, I couldn’t do that being as it isn’t a true Smith.
Well, I had a SILVER coin from a DOG FOOD bag , it was “The American Prospector” . 1 oz .999 pure silver, so I inlaid that on the front where the S would be..If I don’t have a pic already I’ll take one later today.
Freakin hard to post inline pics with Picasa, I’m not a pooter genius , I’ma wood genius..LOL

Great looking bass I have a Ken Smith Bass that I bought about 12 years ago. Awesome instrument. I bet yours is of the same quality. It was that bass that inspired me to build my own. I would love to do custom basses for a living but my job gets in the way.
Thanks for sharing, and welcome to Lumberjocks

If you look inside the control cavity, we USED to have our initials in there, the guy who did the carving on the bass. We did that in case of a return for issues assoc. the workmanship.
I wasn’t there 12 yrs ago, it was well before that, but if the bass was used, and it has a DGK inside there ( maybe under the shielding paint) I made it.
