Here’s a fun little piece I’ve just finished. For the moment I will call this one “Back To School” in the absence of a better title. The skeletal ‘bones’ are just a bit of whimsey since like most of my wooden ‘pictures’ or 3D semi-sculptures, the inspiration was a piece from my scrap box – a cut off from an earlier project of small boat models. You can see the boat shape in the outline of the large fish here, and the ‘bones’ just followed naturally.
The fish are merely representative and of no particular kind – perhaps vaguely of a herring sort.
This piece contains walnut, two species of ash, white pine, and pin oak (the stick on the right) and bits of other woods, all on plywood. The ply has a multi-colored acrylic wash to suggest an underwater scene, and I’ve included a bit of intarsia work at the bottom. The eyes are painted acrylic resin castings. The frame is mahogany. Overall size is 22” x 34” and the finish is marine varnish over it all.
The main point is my wife Annie likes it!
