Gear Head- Glass Skull Mason Jar Puzzle

I do enjoy building puzzles around the concept of having ‘treasure’, and when I find a container that is awesome all by itself, well, I get inspired.

Gear Head is an 8 moves to open mechanical puzzle box that hides its treasure out in the open, but elusively secured from being accessed easily. Four of the eight dials are real functioning dials, while the other four are Red Herrings that feel real, but are there just to add to the complexity.

From the design you can see that the wood gear mohawk inspired tall lock brace is what needs to be removed to allow access to the jar. However, if you look at the bottom of the box you can see that ‘X’ marks the spot, and you actually need to remove the bottom before you can remove the lock brace. Tricky Treats await once inside, as there is a set of bright white LED lights positioned under the Glass Skull Mason Jar and so depending on whats inside, it can look pretty cool.

The mohawk is half of a wooden gear that was left over from the last project. The exterior is made from primarily Bloodwood and Wenge with Curly Maple highlights. The interior mechanical parts are made from a colourful boquet of exotic woods.

If you have a radical idea of what you would consider to be great a treasure, let me know, I might just make it.

Love the design and can imagine the fun it is to develop the concepts.

Very distinctive and peculiar box. Kind of scarry also. Puzzle box could be very intriguingly – just like yours.

Only 8 moves? Geeze, you’re going soft in your old age!

Looks wicked cool though !

Oh my Kel! One of your best. A puzzle box with a reward…...and it lights up! What could be better. Great job on this one.

Kel, you have used a nice selection of woods in creating this box. The lights are an especially interesting treat. You are having way too much fun with these designs. This is a fine combination of craftsmanship, problem solving, and pure whimsy. Well done. Keep boxing and keep posting.
