Project Information

My thanks to Gary Lowe and Tim Yoder on Youtube for their inspiration to create this bowl/platter/art piece. When I first saw their Cosmic Clouds I was struck by them so gathered the items needed over a few weeks and finally found a wide oak board two inches thick so I could give it a go.

My first attempt at the iridescent painting was foiled by the wrong mixing medium that I had picked up so I turned off the paint layer and redid it with the correct solution. Voila! It was fun and ended up better than I had hoped.

My version is smaller than those by Gary and Tim. It's only 10" across. I'm still on the look out for some wider, light colored wood.

This project was a blast to make and the result even impressed SWMBO. This may get to stay in the house.

I'd love to hear what you think. Thanks for looking.

Impressive, one of the nicest one I have seen. Hope to get all the materials and try one this winter.

Well I love it, great color and interest. I don't normally go for bowls with color on them, just not my thing. This however is striking and many will love this. Being a pretty new turner I am always looking to try now things, this is now on my list. I turned 2 bowls this morning before work on 5 inch Black Acacia and one 14 inch Black Acacia.

Well done,

Thx for Sharing.

Thanks for the comments. This round obsession is getting out of hand. A friend who does tree removal (who wouldn't appreciate that guy as a friend?) dropped off four large black walnut crotches on my driveway last night, gratis! He said they were going to be bulldozed into a field an burned if he hadn't taken them.

I've got 6 grocery bags full of shavings with a rough turned bowl in each drying for the next 3-6 months. I've got 7 or 8 more pieces of wet wood sitting around waiting for rough turning and it kills me to get up and go to work instead of going out to the shop to make shavings fly. I need to retire!

I've only been turning bowls for 12 months and I'm very addicted.
