After receiving an order for a floating shelf from a client in Alaska, I headed to the lumberyard in search of a a few Birdseye Maple boards. After pouring through the entire stack of boards available at my supplier I found 2 beautiful boards full of figure.

I spent the next week crafting this shelf from those boards.

The shelf features 3 equally sized drawers, hand carved Bubinga pulls and has overall dimensions of 34”L x 6”D x 4.5”H.

The figure is truly stunning in person. Got to love Birdseye!

Stunning really beautiful, what are the brass looking things in the draws, are they hinges ??? And if so why are they sitting like that and how did you keep the spacing of the draws to keep them from racking

I use 90 degree brass stop hinges as drawer stops. They are mounted to the interior of the top and fold up when the drawer is pushed in. They drop down when the drawer is pulled out to prevent it from coming all the way out. Any other method of a drawer stop would eliminate too much of the drawer space as the shelf is thin at 6”.

I used a guide system on the bottom of the drawer to keep them aligned.

Impressive floating shelf, Nick. Like all your work, the craftsmanship is outstanding. I love everything about the shelf and the grain in the Birdseye is gorgeous.
