Learning how to turn wood on the lathe is fascinating and addictive. I turned this from a piece of fire wood. Black locust I think. I am experimenting with finishes as well. I dunked the piece in in Minwax satin polycyrlic I wasnt happy with it when it dried so i put it back on the lathe and sprayed it with Kyrlon Crystal Clear with the piece spinning. The finish turned out interesting. The finish developed a grain running the opposite way of the wood grain. Now resides on my bathroom sink holding Q-tips.

I second Bambi’s comment, You’re hooked and let the fun begin.

-- Bob, Western Australia, The Sun came up this morning, what a great start to the day. Now it's up to me to make it even better. I've cut this piece of wood 4 times and it's still too damn short.

I just looked at both your project I see what you mean. It is relaxing and I really enjoy watching the soul of the wood come out.

I agree with both Bob and Bambi, it is a neat hobby. I fought against receiving a “free” wood lathe a year ago due to not having enough room in my shop and my lack of knowledge of a lathe. It sat in the corner of my shop for 4 months until someone asked me to make them something. I’ve been hooked ever since. I love my lathe. Enjoy yours and have fun.
