Like many Lumberjocks, my favourite things are boxes. This is my wife’s sewing box and it’s one of her favourite things. The Lacewood is, I believe, quarter sawn London Plane (Platanus x hispanica?). There appear to be other timbers with that same name. I used the Leigh jig for the dovetail joints.
The design is very strongly influenced by a box in one of those lovely Fine Woodworking Design books. Many thanks to whoever made that one.

Stunning. I too love the latches. The wood is also awesome. Your wife is one lucky woman.
Thanks for the look.

This is a great box! It gives me an idea for a box. Having four sides lacewood with halfblinds to walnut corner pieces. Yours is beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

Great sewing box Stewart.
There are so many things on LJ that we keep saying I want to make one of them.
And your chest is no exception. A great tribute to a great box.

Sew what? I can’t help but say it, “I just love small wooden boxes”, particularly when as beautifully crafted as this one. You can bet, Stewart, that one version or another of this great looking latch will appear on a number of small boxes, perhaps even one of mine.
Nice work, great craftsmanship.

Stewart that is an absolutely beautiful box. Well designed and executed. I’m with everyone else – I like the wooden hasp/keeper design.

Not that it hasn’t been said already but, those are great latches, and are those wooden hinges I see in the back there?

Thanks so much for all those lovely lovely comments but I must reiterate, that this one was heavily inspired by a box in a Fine Woodworking Design Book so I can’t claim much in the way of design. I can’t remember which volume but I’ll dig it out when I have time and give credit to the original designer.
Oh, and Shaun, they are wooden hinges too.

I recall the issue that may have inspired these, but the craftsmanship is all yours. Fantastic box!

Thank you; thank you. Bob – I didn’t keep a note of the time I took, but I’d reckon something around 40 hours. Matt – Yes the drawer is real. MOT I like your idea – quite a challenge but should be really striking

I promised to give credit to the maker of the box from which I stole the features on this one. The book (Fine Woodworking Biennial Design Book) is dated 1977 and the originator was Philip Nereo of Windsor California. He’d priced it at $400 then. Thanks Philip.
