Project Information

My wife asked for "shawl pins", so after asking, and then further investigation to find out what shawl pins are, I got a chance to do some small spindle work on the lathe. Making these will hopefully help me build skills to make finials to cap off some small hollow forms I'd like to try in the not-to-distant future.

The single pin is maple, the group of 3 are mahogany. After looking them up on the internet and checking out pricing, many of these sell for about $3 - $4. While it's a very small amount of wood, each took me about 15-25 minutes. It would have been easier to just buy them, but then again, maybe that's the point. She wears them with a smile :) How do you put a price on that?

noknot, these go through the weave of two parts of a shawl. The pins hold the parts together so the shawl doesn't move around or fall off. (I had to ask about them myself, having no shawls in my wardrobe) - although from an earlier contest photo that has left me scarred, it's possible that Grizz would be able to tell you more!
