So I dragged my girlfriend into a Japanese knife store two days ago. I acted like a little kid, getting super excited. I jokingly showed her my favorite and told her to get it if she was looking for gift for me. She came back half an hour later and bought it. :D

I used a piece of basswood from my dad’s model airplane material because I am a new woodworker who does not have a good stash of thin stock or an effective means of making it. On the up side, it won’t dull the edge.

I traced out the profile on the basswood and cut it out with a knife.

I got into it so I forgot to take pictures at this point. I laminated 1” hard maple on either side of the basswood with rice glue. Then I ripped off 3/4” from each side with my ryoba. I then planed it down and shaped it with a spoke shave.

Its a perfect fit; comes out easy but does not come out when shaken.
