I have this project on my mind since I saw it on the cover of Woodworking mag (publication no longer exists – rats). I thought the joinery was so impressive that I had to try to make it. This project was the first attempt, and I think it turned out pretty good. All the joinery was cut using hand tools. Finished using Tung Oil and dark wax.

I am planning another one that will be out of Walnut so that I can have one in my shop and one in our family room.

Your first attempt at those joints turned out perfectly and you have a beautiful stool boot!

Looks like some tricky angles to get right. Are the tenons wedged?

Thanks for your nice messages. I recommend purchasing the Chinese Stool article from Popular Woodworking’s online site if you want to build one of these. There’s also a companion video which I watched during my build process.

Walking into this project, I was nervous about cutting the stretcher tendons. However, they went together within an hour. The key is making the template guide that Robert Lang describes in the article/video.

Matt thats a very nice looking stool,
