I was asked to frame this guidon (flag) as a going away gift for my departing commander at a squadron I belonged to some years ago. While she was commander, we stood down one group and stood up another in its place, so the flag was hers for the taking. She was probably the most even-keeled and down to earth commander I’ve had thus far in my career, so I put a little more effort into it than simply making a frame from stock moulding.
The frame is cherry, curly maple and peruvian walnut. I splined the corners with maple as well. The coins are epoxied into recesses a bloodwood board. For a finish I used good old Formby’s tung oil varnish followed by several coats of extremely thinned wiping poly to bring up the shine on the frame.

Very nice construction; I’m sure she was pleased with her parting gift. I like the mix of woods, and the splined corners. Good work!

That is a very nice frame! I am sure she has it proudly displayed somewhere prominent.
Great job for a special person. Those of us who have served KNOW how important a good and competant CO is!
God Bless,
