A friend of mine passed away that was a school teacher. The school wanted to start a memorial garden in her memory and her husband asked me to build an arbor for them. We got a local 84 Lumber to donate the treated lumber and the project was on. Her fellow teachers wanted to call the garden A “Young” Place in memory of Glenna Young. As an added touch I printed a banner with that saying on it and transferred it to the cross piece of the arbor. I hand carved the letter in the brace with my Bosch Colt router and a flat bottomed .25” straight bit. Yes, it was time consuming but I am very happy with the way it turned out. Since the install there have been lots of flower and a fountain also put in around the garden.

Great job. Your work will be there for all to enjoy as a memorial to someone special. Nice way to apply your woodworking skill!

Very cool work, using the router to carve those letters. I have a similar project in mind for a Christmas present. Was it difficult to control the router freehand? Good job!

Robb, it was not all that difficult to control the router. The worst part was the treated lumber being so wet. I have not tried it on any drier wood but will try it again sometime.

Grant – nice memorial and giving tribute. The routered lettering is a wonderful addition. She would be proud of the work you and others have graciously done in her name.
