The box measures 6.5’’ x 3.5” (165×90mm). This is my first use of barrel hinges (5mm) which was the tricky part. I expected the lid to stay open at 90 degrees, but it didn’t quite make it. At least the lid still stays open without being propped up. Its interesting, since I followed the manufacturer’s recommendations and bevelled the back edges 45 degrees. It will need more work to tweak it for the next box.
I was pleased with the contrast of the purple heart lid and maple body. I wanted to use purple heart for the bottom but ran out so, I used walnut as the other darker wood I had. The First nations sun design, cut on the scroll saw was applied before I put on the finish (Minwax Polyrub) , thinking the glue might not take as well, but it made things more difficult applying an even finish. I’ll reconsider doing the application after the finish is done
The wood for the sun design was 1/8 ” (3mm) curly maple and maple veneer was used to line the lid and bottom.
Thanks for looking.

Looks great to me Bob. Nice to see traditional designs being honoured. It’s a piece to be proud of.
Well done.

Bob, nice work. I like the top design, and I see the finish problem. Not sure how to solve that. Scratching away some finish under each part might work, but would be tedious. Would super glue penetrate the finish? Maybe the best answer would be to glue it up and apply rattle-can-spray finish on just the top. If you apply thin coats that might work. Thanks for sharing your project with us. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Good suggestion from Big Al re spraying the finish. His comment on multiple thin coats makes a lot of sense.
Hope to hear your results when you try this.
Still think it looks good. :)

Thanks guys for the comments and suggestions. Will try your method of applying multiple thin coats.

Beautiful sign on top – very good scroll saw work. Me also don’t have experience with barrel hinges – this is good reminder to pay attention to it if ever use. I like those rounded compartment inside.
