This is a Derby style cane handle made from Black & White Ebony. The B/W Ebony had a natural crack in it that I filled with fine ebony dust & epoxy, then layered in some silver foil and freshwater pearls to give the natural void an interesting hidden treasure. The natural black veining of the ebony is revealed by each stroke of the file and sandpaper and the blonde wood is ever changing with the jet black veins trying to emerge.
The collar is made of Gaboon Ebony and the shaft is Tiger Maple that I “ebonized” and sanded away to reveal the stripes made from the stain resisting the hard wood and penetrating the soft wood. If I were to do this again, I may use a brown stain along with the black to pull the color of the shaft closer to the color of the handle, but I wanted to show that I used multiple types of woods and techniques in this project.
