I made this bowl & fruit from timber taken from an old apple tree that had gone rotten and was in danger of falling. Photographs 3 & 4 show the piece of timber that the bowl in pictures 1,2 & 4 was made from, the apples and pears were made from a few pieces of branch wood. The bowl was turned using a bowl gouge on about 600 RPM on my record lathe and finished naturally with cellulose sander sealer and 3 coats melamine lacquer. the fruit is dyed to represent as close as possible the natural fruit and finished with sander sealer and melamine lacquer. The Bowl and Fruit were given to the lady who actually owned the tree as compensation for the loss of her tree which incidentally she has replaced with a young tree, she was very surprised at the gift and couldn’t believe it had come from such a rough piece of timber. The large black spot is the actual rot that killed the tree which had found its way into the tree through a badly pruned branch from many years before.
