So I went to this really nice all-boys high school. Ever year they have this black tie dinner/auction and I’ve donated something to it almost every year. I’m displeased with them this year so I decided to donate something completely absurd- a pair of balls, in the school’s colors- Blue and Gold. Realizing that this was seriously useless, I made a Mahogany box, ten sided with a lift-off lid, to keep them in. This is quite possibly the most fun I have had making a gift for this auction.
The balls are 5” in diameter, the blue one being maple dyed with Transfast Turquoise Blue. The yellow ball is yellowheart. Both are finished with three coats General Finishes Danish oil, the last one being wet-sanded with 600 grit. SUPER SMOOTH!
The box is Mahogany, with the top and bottom 1/4” plywood veneered in Walnut Burl. Made the rabetts for the top using the technique in this or last months Fine Woodworking for making small boxes.. It’s very easy, I got it on the first try, and I didn’t even have the magazine near me! I finished the box in Rockler Wipe on Poly Gel. It’s unavailable right now, but it will be back on store shelves soon.
