Carving Tool Chest

Built another chest to accommodate the knives and palm tools. First one was too big, second one (not posted as a project) was too small. This one is closer to what I need.

Red Oak, stained with Minwax Golden Oak, finished with three coats of satin Minwax fast-drying polyurethane. Drawers are lined with expanded vinyl. My first foray into lining drawers wasn’t fun- every bit of sawdust and the chips from carving got stuck in it all the time. I don’t enjoy vacuuming out a tool chest! The vinyl allows me to just use a little air.

Drawer separators are basswood window blinds cut to size. Saw that here, but don’t remember who showed it, at the moment. Drawers slide on wooden rails.

No knobs. I wanted to maximize the volume while minimizing the weight, they are about a pound. There are rare earth magnets embedded in the faces of the drawers, which I can pull open using a magnet, or just bump the carcass and the drawers slide a little. No lid, locks or latches, also to save weight. My wife is sewing up a vinyl cover to hold the drawers in and weatherproof it.

Nice Flexcut collection that you have in that beautiful tool chest. Well organized, and it’s great to see how well it suits your carving requirements. Well done.

Thanks! I hope I don’t need to buy many more, or I’ll have to retrofit one of the lower drawers. Drawers 7 and 8 are currently unoccupied. I do have 2-1/2 drawers (3, 4 and 5) of palm tools, so there is room to expand there.
