This is a record chest I built as a commission for a friend. It’s made of black walnut, with padauk and maple accent woods.
The hand-shaped tops took the longest time. They were something I added in after I started the build, to match the overall look of the piece. (see original drawing above- those shaped tops were not included!)
Looking back I had no idea I’d be able to make the tops look this good. They took DAYS of shaping. All from 8/4 walnut slabs I glued together, trying to use minimum sapwood and defects.
I shaped the tops with gouges, scrapers, sandpaper, and planes… including my radius Hock plane I built with some beech I have.
This took 4 months, from initial drawing to delivered. Original drawing is included above.
