Here is a hardwood mallet I made with my father in laws friend. He is a talented woodworker, has a really neat shop & is generous with his time, tools & knowledge.
We cut the head pieces to size and sanded & clamped & glued everything together. By angling the pieces we didnt need to insert a dowel or wedge. Assembling it was fun / he showed my how to use an angle bevel / sliding t bevel.
We didnt have time to work on the handle so I shaped it by hand with rasps & finished with sandpaper…. It took a while. Handle is hard maple.
The first picture is without any finish.
2 nd photo is finished with linseed oil – i love this Malaysian hardwood color!
3 rd photo is of several of my larger trapezoid head mallets. Second from left is this balou Version.
This is really heavy with a solid feel when you pick it up.
I gave it to my friend for Christmas & he really seemed quite pleased. He works as a maintenance tech but told me he wont use it at work.
One of my favorites I’ve made….
