I made a music box version of this one about a year ago, but I was disappointed with the results.
It was WAAY too complicated, so I dumbed the mechanism down to six gears and a cam.

The idea for the music-box-to-lamp conversion came to me while I was watching a photographer blast away with his umbrella strobes.
A light bulb appeared over my head – happens a lot.

My guardian angel – it wasn’t my idea – suggested that I look for a doll umbrella on eBay.
Sure enough, American Girl doll accessories to the rescue !!!

So I had a little fun, honed some skills, and came up with yet another reason to make a video.

You’ll find that here … https://vimeo.com/183579177

Like this one. I like your thought process in taking an idea to project completion! Keep ‘em coming!

That was so beautiful I got a frog in my throat!
Why didn’t you animate the mouth …. I bet it was because you knew I would make a stupid comment like that!

Just fantastic John.

What kind of lube do you use on the axles?

Thanks, Madts.

I finish my gears and cams with a light coat of wiping poly. Once they’re in place and running, I drip heavy-weight gunsmith oil into the meshing gear. With that method, the lubricant is spread evenly through the drivetrain.

Thanks, Candy.

I’m not sure where the idea for an argyle vest or sweater came from, but I think it works.

The sweater and the mouth were experiments in CAD-generated “decals”.
There’s NO WAY that I can paint that kind of detail.
