Hello everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster. You’ve all provided me with so much info over the past few years that I thought I needed to actually join and at least share what I’ve learned, although the execution may not be the greatest. Here is one of my earlier projects. We had just moved into our new place and wanted to kind of make our fireplace wall in our master bedroom a sort of feature wall. So the wife and I made this sign after painting the wall and painting the accents on the fireplace. The sign is made of 1×6 pine from the big box store. The boards were cut into 2’ 6” foot sections and joined together with glue and pocket holes. The total dimensions are 2’ 6” tall and 2’ wide. I refrained from using the jointer and planer and lightly sanded the surface. We wanted it to look a little rougher than not. We stained it with a whitewash stain and experimented with Mod Podge for the lettering. I’ll have to admit that I was skeptical with how the Mod Podge would turn out, but it turned out so much better than we both expected. I guess she was right. Don’t tell her I said that.

Nice project. I had looked into mod podge for a project but ended up going another route as I was skeptical I could make it work. Maybe I should have tried it as your project looks really nice.

Thanks BB1. Using Mod Podge on a board this big was a bit tricky. Since we could only print the text on a normal sheet of paper (8.5” x 11”), we had to make sure we lined up the sheets correctly so that the text wouldn’t look skewed. We couldn’t use, or couldn’t figure out how to use registration markers to help us line it up, because the registration markers would be transferred to the board as well. I have to give it to my wife though, she lined everything up by hand.

Interesting. Sounds like a challenge but it really turned out great.

That’s a nice piece of work.
