pecking chickens, made from fir. The heads go up and down when you swing the egg, making the chickens peck at the seeds.
The hinges are toothpicks, the egg is turned.
The seeds are quinoa.

That’s a pretty nifty toy. Can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like it. The bright colors look good on it too.

My grandmother had a similar toy when I was little and I always coveted it :)
I understand they’re a traditional toy in Russia, but we’re nowhere near Russia so I don’t know where it came from ;)

Wood Magazine Dec 1986 pg 48, is an article on folk toys, there are plans to build this and other toys. :)

Cool one of the old Shopsmith plans.
They showcased many simple plans,and there are some other cool one on that site.
I have made some of them many years ago but never the chickens.
And must say you did one super nice job with this one.
