Flag case for an amazing grandpa

My grandfather passed away two years ago this Saturday, and I made this flag case for his interment flag. He flew Spitfires in WWII in the US Army Air Corps with one confirmed kill (Fw 190).

The case is made out of walnut, and I elected to take the ‘easy’ route by not dealing with 22.5 degree miters. The 45s were tricky enough for me. Finished with GF Arm-R-Seal in satin. This is the first piece I’ve made w/out hardware for joinery (splines for joints), and other than the joint at the top it turned out pretty good.

My grandpa was an amazing man and a wonderful grandpa, so it was a pretty meaningful project for me.

It’s on the way to my grandma right now, should be there on Thursday.

I made one of these a few years back for my wife’s uncle. I did miter my corners but might not have if I would have seen your solution. Great tribute!

Nice work! It will be a wonderful family heirloom and memorial for your Grandfather.

Very nicely done. It’s always great to hear folks speak well of their family. Great pic of your grandfather. Thanks for sharing the story and posting the pic.

Thanks everyone! He WAS an amazing grandpa! I added the picture because every time I see someone make a shadow box or flag case I always wonder a bit about who the piece is for. That was just a simple way to make a connection – and it’s a cool picture.
