This is a replica of an antique pepper mill I saw in a local museum. The top is all cast bronze (Penn State Industries) and the bottom is turned from Figured Maple and finished with Shellawax. It was easy to turn the outside but boring out the inside on a drill press was quite a challenge. I had to drill from top and bottom in the hope of meeting up exactly in the middle. My drill press has a 3.5” stroke and the base is 5” high.

You inspire me Jim – just ordered a pepper mill from Penn state and plan to use figured maple.

Great design. I’ve looked at the grinders at Penn state but never bought one. I did pick up a couple of Post Office box doors. But I’ve never used them either.
