Wife had been bugging me about the broken doorbell cover that I threw away. I told her that I was going to make one, and eventually, this was what I came up with. It started out in my head as a sunflower, but the wife thought I should make a sun face instead.
I hate carving faces, because if you get them wrong, everyone knows it. We all know what a face looks like, where the nose goes, what shape and eye or mouth has… Getting the face right is very tough for me, since I can’t really draw worth a lick…
Anyhow, I turned this round on the lathe out of some basswood, then badsawed the rays, and relief carved them. Add a small block for a nose, carve a face, and voila! I get tired of looking at it, so I start to work on color. The entire thing is covered in gesso with Mixol pigments added, then waxed and hand buffed.
Comments welcome.

Looks great but, I’m not sure what a doorbell cover is. Could you show how it is installed? Like Loucarb said how big is it?
Thanks for sharing

It covers the actual mechanical/electrical workings of the ringer int he halllway. You know, the thing that goes “ding dong” when someone rings your doorbell? I put a screw into the wall and I made a hanger clip that catches the screw head out of some scrap steel. There are three feet that space it off the wall and over the bell box.
In all, I’d guess it’s about 11”x 2” deep. 3.5” if you add in the point of his nose and the spacers…

Cool design, impressive carving and just a real clever idea to begin with. Nice work (as usual). Bob
