Some time ago I received a copy of the Fine Woodworking magazine that had a picture of a Wooten desk on the cover, I knew at that time I would like to build such a desk, I searched for plans but could never find them as some of your readers have, anyway I thought that this would be the year to begin, the walnut is from trees that were being cleared in a subdivision project many years ago, the spalted maple I got from a friend who had a couple of logs laying in the pasture, it is difficult to try to build something without all the dimensions although the magazine does have the general sizes. I hope to complete this project this year and use it in my study.

Today March 3 I have added another photo of the progress of this project, since we are on holidays the project is at a standstill till we return, I have purchased brass hinges for the two side doors. The main case is completed and I am working on the lap top, hope fully when I return home I fill complete this and post the result, I have started to work on the doors that will enclose the main desk I have attached a photo of the progress so far.
Here it is May 2011 and and I have completed most of the front doors. I have carved the wooden inserts when will fit in the front of the doors with a maple leaf on each side.
WELL HERE IT IS 2013 AND I HAVE RESTARTED THE WOOTEN DESK PROJECT, AS YOU CAN SEE I HAVE PROGRESSED SOME MORE. THE LAST THREE PHOTOS SHOW THE INSERTS THAT FIT INSIDE THE TWO DOORS, THE LEFT INSERT IS COMPLETED WITH THE EXCEPTION OF BACKING. I AM WORKING ON THE RIGHT INSERT WHICH ARE THE SMALL DRWAERS 40 IN ALL, I HAVE CUT SYCAMORE WOOD IN THE QUARTER CUT STYLE AND ALTERNATE THEM WITH SPALTED MAPLE, ALL THE JOINTS FOR THE DRAWERS ARE THE BOX TYPE. Thanks for looking at it.

That’s awesome. I love the contrasts. Really cool build.

This is beautiful…..I would really like to try something like this but I think it’s above my comprehension. Thanks for showing us.

WOW..
Seeing some pictures of a Wooten desk is what inspired me to start woodworking, but I still have a lot to learn before I attempt such a piece.
Did you happen to make plans as you went? I would LOVE to have a copy, even rough sketches would be helpful to anyone attempting to build such a wonderful piece.
