Amarillo Coffee Table

This table started out as a mock up for a close friend who owns a gallery in Los Angeles. He asked me to make a table for him that would be ” Craftsman-Chic” LOL! After fiddling around with some MDF, ( For the record, I have a deep disdain for MDF ) I pulled out some scraps of yellowheart and hard maple and as luck would have it I just happened to have a small piece of scrap white acrylic too. The frame is a simple cross half lap. The acrylic sits in a 3/8” deep stop dado. Inside stock of one short rail was removed to allow for final assembly. The maple legs are 1 3/4” tapering to 7/8”. The finish on this version is a pre-cat lacquer. The final version will have photo-sensitive LED panels to under-light a white glass top.

Side Note: Being that this was a “mock up” the wife laid claim to it immediately. On the bright side, the house smells of pork roast (MY FAVORITE). Not a bad trade in my opinion.

The pics were taken on my phone. Better ones to come soon.

I could imagine a bunch of banged up shins when walking by that LOL.

Love the table! I can’t wait to see the final version with the photo-sensitive LED panels. (Where does one get such cool LED panels by the way?) You definitely hit the “Craftsman-Chic” goal. Great job, thanks for sharing. :)

Viking, Here is a link to the panels. Check out the video. Thanks for the compliments.

Interpim – The first banged up shin will most likely be mine. The up side is that the table is fairly light. My 18 month old daughter has made a game of pushing it around the living room. How is the weather in Sunny San Diego? Spent some time in Coronado once upon a time.

Craftsman-Chic … a lovely style!

When I looked at it from a certain angle it looked like a piece of furniture from a Disney movie—where the furniture walks about. I’m sure this fella is ready to rock and roll.

Pretty cool table! I might try it with a twist (if I can afford the acrylic and the LEDs). Anybody that knows me will know the twist that I’ll TRY to throw on it.
Why the “deep disdain” for MDF? I REALLY can’t say that it is my favorite thing to work with (actual wood is obviously ideal) but I’ve seen some pretty cool things done with MDF.
