I got the idea for this out of a catalog that sold something similar but it had a metal backbone, was smaller and they wanted $175 for it. I made this for let than $20 out of a single piece of mahogany and used walnut stain. Mounted to a stud this thing will support my weight (6’1”; 240). If you load books on every shelf it gives the impression they are simply floating on the wall. I envisioned several of these but ideas change. Simple construction and very effective.
You can alter the design all you like as you can see I added two small platforms for wife’s nick nacks and candles.

Looks good to me, What did you use for joints? Pocket screws? BTW, Welcome to LJ!!

nice design… i’m also curious as to the joinery, as well as where you were able to find that much mahogany for only $20??
