While working on my double knot, I wanted to make something else as well. Here’s what I came up with.
upper barrel:
the dots are maple inlays (they only appear on the side of the pen currently displayed). I used a forstner bit and plug cutter to make these.
lower barrel:
The long strip is also an inlay of maple.
the three shorter rings are laminates. I made the cuts for these laminates in a similar method to how the celtic cross is made. The only difference is the pen blank was held at 90 degrees to the saw blade rather than 45.
I like the concepts of what I’ve done, but I’m really not overly excited about the complete look. I don’t think I really tied the two halves together well enough in this example. BUT… at least I know how to go about making more!
To show the inlays better, I’ve added the second picture which is the reverse side of the pen and all that’s seen are the short rings.

An experimental pen. It looks cool. I did some laminations with cocobolo and paduak. My wife was unimpressed. I thought they looked cool. She took the pen to work and lost it so I didn’t show it. I like this one, darryl, it shows the outcome of experimentation with blank preparation. It’s pretty cool.

Looks like you’re learning a lot of new techniques and we benefit from your work. Great stuff.
