My first version of this animated lamp had two giraffes, a complicated mechanism, and an elaborate background … http://lumberjocks.com/projects/189914

It went on to be a published project in Woodcraft Magazine where it was a hit with many of the reader/builders.
I should have counted my blessings and retired it.

But I didn’t.

This less-is-more version focuses on a single figure, adds an inch to the giraffe’s neck, eliminates some of the clutter, uses a simpler mechanism, and doubles the arc swing from 15 to 30 degrees.

I like it better! DO YOU?

This guy is cute, but if you wanna take him to the next level, make his head move separate from the neck. Shouldn’t be a problem for YOU to figure out :)

It definitely is simpler. I think I like it cause it would take up less room on the table. Can’t really say which one I like better.

Hmmm.
Definitely doable, but it might give him/her a “walk like an Egyptian” look.
Cue the clipart.

Excellent comment !!!
That was another reason for making it.
The first one is more like a piece of furniture than a lamp.

Man you just keep turning these out! As far as the two lamps, I like them both. Anyway, I always look forward to seeing what kind of lamp you’ve built next!

Sorry, Dean.
Bad answer.
It’s time to get Mean and pick one.

My vote is for the two rather than the one. I just like the symmetry of the other lamp and the mechanism is really cool to watch.

I thought the same thing just after I posted that, but on second thought it might not if you make the head swivel DOWN instead of up.

Joe:

Another option is to leave it just the way it is.
Try this interpretation …

The giraffe is throwing it’s head back with a laugh.

With that story, the giraffe is anatomically correct as presented.
