This Rustic Barnwood Dog/Toddler Bed was something I came up with to utilize some of the shorter pieces of real barnwood I have left over from building bigger barnwood furniture items. It is a mini version of the barnwood bed I made in pic 3 in 2004 for an oufit in Napa Valley, CA. I alternated the brown inside stall wood with the grey outside barnwood in the panels, I like the contrast that way. I kind of screwed up on this one, I grabbed a short board that I meant to save and after I had it cut I flipped it over and there were two signatures from L.D Feb 24 1934 and B.D Mar 14 1934, so the headboard has an interesting trademark to it. I reclaimed this wood from a barn, two clicks South of Heidenhiemer, TX on Hwy 36… I usually like to keep those boards I find with the old builders or farmers signatures…Oh Well….Anyway the headboard and foot panels are around 33×23 and the inside platform is 28.5×36 to except a medium Dog Pillow, by extending the side rails to 52 it will fit a standard crib mattress..the top, bottom, side rails all have 1.5 inch x 1.5 W x 1.5L tenons into 1.5” deep mortises, there is a centered 3/4 inch w x 3/4 + 1/16 inch D dado in the top and bottom rails to hold the barnwood planks snug and give room to breathe, only the rails are glued with tII. This is my first prototype and after studying it, next time I think I will shorten the footboard by a third and also do one with no footboard and just a low rail…kind of like a platform bed…it is an idea in progress..

Finished with non toxic water based PolyCrylic, it brings out the natural color real well…

Thanx and Be Well…

Great Job, Frank! Great looking grain. It looks like it has some curl in it.

Cool project Frank. Please tell me though that there’s a picture of two horses hanging in your bedroom that makes it look like a stable…

Regards,

Thanx Dennis and Putter…Yea Dennis it does have some wild grain, I find it best to leave it alone and let it speak it’s own story although I am really tempted!!....Naw Putter, that bed was shipped to a Chefs: Michael Chiarello with Napastyle in Napa, CA. , that was a photoshoot pic for his catalog in 04…and that could have been his barn/stall/bedroom, who knows/cares, his check cleared yea I know that sounds “tack”..ie :) .....and well I would not have my horses that close in reality, but by accident , there have been a couple of times my horses got loose and ran the whole county and then woke me up wanting breakfast… hell next thing you know they would want their own cable tv remote and a big plasma tv..and a freezer with carrots and apples…hehe..so they can watch Mr. Ed and kick my arse out of bed ;)

Thanx and Be well…
