This is my standard design jewelry box. I make it in 3 sizes, all using the same construction techniques. this version is 12” x 8” x 3.5” with a 4”x6” sliding tray inside. dividers are removable if the customer want this as a presentation box. Interior lining is Ultrasuede fabric over 2mm foam. This box features grain matched miter joints with 1/8” keys for strength and visual interest. Lid panel is bookmatched figured big Leaf maple. This was completed in December 09 and the cherry has already started to darken.

Beautiful box. What did you do to finish the top? How did you get the maple to pop so nicely? Is it a combination of sanding and type of finish?

thanks for looking.

The Big leaf maple is just that beautiful, plus I sand to 220 before first coat of sealer.

I use Bioshield finishes which are made from citrus oils and other more natural compounds than petroleum finishes. I first use the sealer, then after 2-3 days of drying I start building up the “Hardening oil”. I think 5-6 coats of the oil. You use it like Danish oil, hand rub on, then buff off 1/2 hr later with dry cloth. Wait at least 24 hrs between coats, then buff with cotton wheel and apply beeswax. (Claphams)

This is certainly not the least expensive finish, but it is well worth the price when I get comments like ours.If I listed all the different finishes I have tried over the years, it would be ridiculous.

Beautiful box, nice figure. You really did make it ‘pop’.
