These boxes are made from glued up mahogany scraps. The much smaller “ring boxette” is the waste from the larger box…so its 2 for one! I was going to make a really tiny box as a gimmick from the waste cut from the boxette, but decided that dollhouse furniture is not in my future.
The bigger box: Mahogany body and drawer, tiger maple handle. Finish is 3 coats of cut shellac (2 lb. ). Still going to either flock or line the drawer interior (no jokes please). And a good waxing sometime soon.
The Smaller Ring Box: Mahogany (scrap from the bigger box) with tiger maple front face (again scrap leftover from making the handle on the other box). Finish: Potassium Dichromate (3 coats) to oxidize and make it old time red in color. Wiping varnish over that.
Comments and critiques welcome.

Ratchet, I always like curved boxes. These are very nice and the finishes are great too. What was the compass there for? just to show the size?

I like the use of K2Cr2O7 to deepen the colour to an oldy worldy red.. nice.. and I like the way the false drawer front of the small box matches the outer profile of the carcass. Very smooth transitions.

Very nice boxes. I like how you used the waste from the larger box to make the ring boxette.

K was always my favourite element… These look like well finished boxes – nice and smooth.

Both boxes are beautiful. Great choices on the styles and woods used. Anyone would be proud to display these!
