Project Information

After my Mom saw the pine chest of drawers that I built, she needed a furniture fix from her son. She said that she always wanted a real bookcase that wasn't RTA (Ready-to-assemble from a big box store).

So she commissioned me to build this bookcase. The day after I bought the material, she called and said things didn't look good at work and to "hold off" on the project. Good timing Mom! :)

I then arranged for her to pay me a little each month for the material. After which I contacted all of my siblings and they all kicked in some cash-ola to me.

Mom, got her non-RTA bookcase for Christmas and she never had to make a payment. I love it when a plan comes together!

The bookcase is made of 5/8" Maple ply with solid maple face frame and dentil moulding. The crown moulding on the top is pine and the back panel is 1/4" Birch. The dentil moulding is stained with Minwax English Chestnut and all else is Minwax Golden Oak. I really like the look of two-tone furniture.

There is currently no lacquer or polyurethane finish on it because it's just too cold in Wisconsin right now to apply it. Mom said she will wait til spring to get it finished.

Merry Christmas Mom!

This is a nice looking bookcase. The crown and dentil molding add visual interest to it and it looks to be well built. I am sure your mother appreciates the effort and time that you put into this.

AndbI am sure it will not take her long to fill it up. :)

Looks very nice. Thanks for posting.
I sure know what you mean about being too cold to apply a finish in Wisconsin. Just a couple of weeks ago I had to finish a small project inside to have it ready for Christmas. We left the house for the day to avoid the fumes. However our cat got high. It seems a lot more friendly now a days.
