Moulding Planes

I watched Tod Herrli’s video on making moulding planes, and thought I would give it a shot. I didn’t want it to look like any old plane so I did some searching. I found this web site (http://thomasguild.blogspot.com/2015/02/the-medieval-toolchest-plane-part-5.html) an tried as best as a could to copy them. The Irons are just made from some O1 steel. They were a joy to make, and work wonderfully, I think I might need to make a whole set.
I’ve made a couple of drawer pulls with them,

But I’ve never made any mouldings with them. If anyone knows of a good video on how to use moulding planes I’d love to hear about it.

Haven’t pulled the trigger on it yet, but Matt Brickford’s book is evidently the bible for making moldings with moulding planes.

From reading the Lost Art Press blog there is evidently some bad blood with LJ, so you can probably buy it from Lee Valley too…

BTW, nice planes. I’d love to see a tutorial!!!!

Nice job, those look tricky to make and fun to use.

By the way, did your username come from the game Fable?

Hah, I thought I recognized it. Loved that game. I want to try making molding planes someday. Cutting the mortise looks very difficult.

It’s not too bad. I’ve made 5 of them now, and you can be off a bit and it dosent effect the function of the plane. And you can’t see it when the wedge is in. I made my first but boring out and cleaning it up with some chisles. But I’ve since made a float out of an old file and it was a godsend.
