Two good friends of mine are getting married next month, so decided to make them something fun for their kitchen. Picked up a Zhen 66 layer damascus steel chefs knife blank, plus padauk and maple burl scales for the handle. One of the rivets went in a bit funky but the epoxy was already mixed so no turning back, couldn’t completely fix the skewed head on it but it still held tight, plus I love the imperfections from doing things by hand. Started the final shaping with files, dowels and sandpaper, went from 80 grit to 400 in traditional paper, then followed up with 600 to 16,000 abrasive cloth (same stuff you can use on bent wood rings) Final finish was four coats of satin Waterlox (quick re buff with 10,000 through 16,000) and one last coat of gloss Waterlox. Now to get the final touches finished up on their matching cutting boards to complete the gift.
