Mad this for my nephew, who is 5. Had the 6 inch circles from some hole saw holes I had made, and decided they would make good train wheels. Made from 2×4 scraps with a 1” dowel for the smokestack. He played with it all night Christmas eve, it tickled me to death!

Great toy! I can tell your nephew was thrilled with it just by the happy smile on his face.
I agree with “cabinetmaster.” Kids do enjoy the simple things. I know it was a revelation to me as a young parent, that my children didn’t have to have the latest, expensive, high-tech toys to be happy. And that’s the way God made it to be, or else only children whose parents could afford expensive toys could be happy.

Very nice! Not to mention a great use of waist materials. Good thinking and great result.
