Here’s the Christmas present I made for my Dad and, hopefully, his new year’s resolution. It’s kind of corny, but my Dad is incredibly hard to shop for. I saw this idea here, on LJs, several months ago as a scrollsawn plaque and thought that it fit my Dad’s personality. I’m not sure if it’s still considered “a round tuit”, but “a spherical tuit” doesn’t have the same ring!
I didn’t have a lathe at the time (I got an old lathe at Christmas), so I carved this entirely by hand from a black walnut log. It measures about 4 inches in diameter. I intended for the wording to be entirely highlighted by the lighter sapwood, but unfortunately sanded through a great deal of it by the time I achieved a sphere. I also intended to install a small quartz clock in the flat underside, but here again I clearly wasn’t the person getting a round to it!

All from carving-awesome job. Round or spherical who cares- it’s still cool.

Neat idea. I’ll comment more when I get a “round tuit”.

Great idea. Everyone needs one of these. Fantastic carving job. When I first saw it, thought it was turned.
Keep it up.
