Jeff, this is gorgeous. The height on this mantle is nice and it has plenty of detail that adds quite of bit of visual interest to it. I also like your inclusion of sapwood in the construction. To me this adds a nice contrast to the cherry.

What kind of finish did you put on it?

One additional comment I would add is that I think your client missed out on a golden opportunity to dress up the looks of the room by adding crown.

Thanks for your comments. The finish is a custom dye I mixed up to match the existing kitchen cabinetry, which is in the adjacent room. It is finished with 4 coats of Crystalac, a waterborn spray finish. This was the first project I did for these clients, and the room is a work in progress. Since these photo’s, I have made two other pieces. One is a large curio cabinet (10’ wide), and on another wall, a custom entertainment center system. I’ll try to post those pics, as I’m new to this site. Check my project gallery in a few days. Lastly, I will be tying all of these pieces in this room (a very, very large family room), with matching cherry wainscoting, and YES, crown moulding around the perimeter of the ceiling.

WOW, love this. Are the moldings built up, or do you have a cutter? Love the finish.
