Project Information

I made this bed for my son Gabriel from 2x lumber and some 4×4 material reclaimed from a pallet. I have to say that I am quite pleased with the outcome. I went with a simple design and simple materials but was still able to produce what I believe to be a very nice piece of furniture. The side rails come from (2) 2×8s, the head and foot board came from (2) 2×12s, and the posts were reclaimed from a couple of pallets. I used a festool domino for the joinery between the head/foot board and the posts. I opted to set the domino on its widest setting and made custom dominos to fit in order to have larger tenons. The rails are joined to the posts with mortised in knock down hardware. The mattress support rail is half of a 2×4 with dadoes for each support to sit in and secured with two 2" screws per slat. The slats that make up the mattress supports are (13) 2×4s that were on clearance at the big box store for a little over $1 each. The bed is stained using Varathane Traditional Cherry stain and 2 coats of lacquer. Thanks for having a look.

Wow - Very Nice. The finish you used makes that 2x Pine look great. I will have to make a note to try that myself.
Great Job.

Excellent! Both beautiful and practical. From looking at the first photo, I would have never guessed it was made from construction lumber.
