I used the same kit for the Father in law's Xmas present last year - not bad quality but I found a circle of roofing lead glued into the base makes them much more stable.
Can I ask what finish you favour ?

Thanks. This one from Woodcraft has a weighted base that seems to do well.

I favor a water proof/resistant finish for anything near water, else make it of an acrylic. But, we like the wood.

I use MinWax Wipe-On Poly clear gloss. Not a water base. But that may work well too. I'll have to experiment with that sometime. You have to be sure to shake this gently so it mixes.

Other polys that come in a can don't even need to be stirred because they are thick. But, they also tend to drip and run. That doesn't work well on a lathe project.

Thanks
