Spalted Pallet Wood Box

This was a Christmas present for my youngest daughter. It is made from pallet wood that had 2 different kinds of spalt in it. The top and bottom both look to be Silvered Pine and the sides appear to be pine also but it has that funky brown spalt all through it. You can not see it in the pics but it does not follow the grain at all.

The wood was starting to get punky in spots and had to cut around some areas that crumbled with a touch. That kind of defined the size this box ended up. Started out a little longer but when doing the box joints, a couple of the fingers blew off when the router hit them. Had to trim a little off the length and try again.

Final size is 7 X 4 1/2 X 4 tall.

Top and bottom have rabbits and mitered edges. Glued together as a block and cut the lid off on the table saw.

Finish is just mineral oil. After sealing it with the oil bath (used 3 ounces of oil before this quit soaking it up) I really liked the flat finish so I left it like that. My daughter really liked the finish also, so I gues it is OK that way.haha

Please leave all comments and suggestions. I appreciate all the feedback and help I get from you.

Thanks for looking.

Scrappy: A great build with recycled materials.

It’s some beautiful looking wood. Nice looking box.

Great recycling job, Scrappy! Really pretty, and you did a good job on box joints in punky wood!

Thanks for all the great comments everyone.

Eddy and Cabinetmaster, Be sure to check those pallets good. You never know what you will find.

Charlie, I wish I had talent like yours for makeing boxes! If you saw as many pallets a day as I do, you would find more good wood. (over 100 a week) haha

Thanks again everyone.

when I saw this I would have never guessed that it was pallet wood. Great job. I have a couple of Oak pallets waiting on the right project.
